Municipal Wi-Fi | Reality bites | Economist.com

Here's a lesson that apparently must be learned with each new grand idea, this time with municipal WiFi. The lesson: there is no free lunch. Successful complex operations and services require investment, expertise and costs. There is always a price to be paid and, lest anyone forget, willing customers must pay, or taxpayers must pay. For those advocates who sponsor 'free' services, please remember that someone will pay or the services will not be provided.

Several U.S. cities and company partners are learning this the hard way with the Muni WiFi craze of the past few years.
